What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is healing technique used throughout Asia. "Gua" means to rub or friction. "Sha" is the term used to describe congestion of blood at the surface of the body. When friction is applied in repeated even strokes, the "Sha" surfaces as small red petechiae. In minutes, the petechiae fades into echymotic patches. The "Sha" disappears totally in two to four days. The color and rate of fading are both diagnostic and prognostic indicators.
The benefits of Gua Sha are numerous. Gua Sha moves stuck blood, promoting normal circulation to the muscles, tissues, and organs directly beneath the surface treated. The patient experiences immediate changes in stiffness, pain and mobility. Normal metabolic processes are restored by the movement of fluids as nutrients are carried to the tissues and metabolic wastes are carried away. Because Gua Sha mimics sweating, it resolves fever.
Gua Sha cools the patient who is overheated, warms the patient who is chilled, nourishes the patient who is deficient, and clears the patient who is excess. Gua Sha is therefore considered an adaptogenic technique.
A care provider considers Gua Sha in any case of pain or discomfort, for upper respiratory or digestive problems, and for any condition where palpation indicates there is Sha.
After Gua Sha, the patient is instructed to cover the area, avoiding wind and exposure to the sun or sudden change in temperature. Stretching is recommended but not a heavy workout on the day of treatment.
What is Neuromuscular Therapy? "NMT"
NMT is a thorough modality or program of recovery from acute and chronic pain syndromes, which uses comprehensive soft tissue manipulative techniques and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation “PNF”, or flexibility stretching, to eliminate the causes of most neuromuscular pain patterns. This specific and scientific approach to muscular pain relief helps to bring balance “homeostasis” between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. NMT enhances the function of joints, muscles and biomechanics (movement) and it releases endorphins, the body’s own natural painkillers. It can be used as a stand alone therapy or integrated into a comprehensive program, complementing all other health care modalities.

"I don’t think words can explain the impact Steve has had on me and my body. I went in to Steve with the highest recommendations hoping that he could help me and my knee pain as well as my overall quad development. Within the first couple months I started to see an amazing improvement in the look of my quad muscle and my knee pain was diminishing. This has helped me tremendously with the sport I am involved in. He has not only helped me to place better at the Pro level but also my workouts have been productive. Without Steve’s help I would not be where I am today….He is extremely knowledgeable, professional and passionate about what he does. I would recommend anyone to him." Felicia Romero
Steve,
I wanted to thank you for literally giving me my life back! As you know I have worked out with weights for years and active almost everyday. Physical fitness is a major part of my life and helps balance my work/life/relationship/mental attitude. When I injured my lower back (herniated disc and spondylothesis) in October 2010 I tried physical therapy 2 days a week for 3-4 months. I started to feel a little better but PT really swapped out one pain for another and after about four months I felt like I was on an assembly line each week just going through the motions. I felt rushed and hurried and never got more than 10-12 min with the acutal trained Physical Therapist, the majority of the work was done by college students after the PT did her 10 min evaluation.
When I hit three months of PT without much change the therapist suggested I stop going to the gym. I tried it and it took the wind out of my sail. Weeks went by and I still felt no better staying away from the gym. I spent alot of time lying on the floor. I had to plan out my weekend outings with my wife wondering if the chair I would sit in at dinner would be OK or how long I could be out that day before I needed to come home. The injury took a toll on my work life, fitness, relationship, and mental stability. I started to wonder if this was going to be my new life and if I just needed to accept it.
By chance I ran into someone I knew from the gym who asked why I had not seen STEVE the NMT. Something told me I needed to see someone who worked out, someone who knew fitness, someone who went beyond the text book and she connected me with you. After seeing you twice I started feeling better and as you promised I was back in the gym in two weeks. Working with you for just under 6 sessions has handed me my life back. After 5 weeks I have days in which I forget I had any issue at all. I jog, walk, weight train, and my work/life/relationship/mental attitude are all back ONLINE.
I wish everyone who suffers from something similar knew how to find you. Doctors and Physical Therapists told me I just had to deal with this my whole life and may need to forget about weight training, they were wrong! You gave me my life back and I cant thank you enough. If you are a new patient of Steve's reading this, follow his advice, stick to the homework, and you will feel better. I lost faith - he restored it! Thank You, Mark Yawitz
“Steve was very knowledgeable and personal. I used Steve to help rehabilitate some atrophy in my left leg and the time spent with Steve was very helpful in getting me back to strength in athletic performance. I highly recommend Steve...You won't be disappointed.” Lee Stephenson
“Steve can tell by observing you the moment you come in where you are hurting and knows how to find exactly where to work - and gets amazing results. He is gifted, skilled, compassionate, and easy to communicate with. His passion for his work, his encouragement and his great sense of humor make dealing with injury a lot more bareable. Steve is our "go to" person for the whole family!” Tami Evans-Wittman, MC LPC
“Working literally side by side with Steve for several years in a busy chiropractic office allowed me the opportunity to observe very closely his work with patients. His skill and experience as an NMT not only produced great results in facilitating pain relief but also inspired me as a fellow therapist and colleague. Steve is very professional and his passion for his work is evident. I would highly recommend Steve to anyone looking for a bodyworker who can really make a difference in quality of life.” Ray Calaguan, Massage Therapist, All Star Health
“I previously worked at the same clinic as Steve for 3 yrs, been treated by Steve on many occasions, and currently he works out of my clinic helping many injured clients. I am a Physical Therapist who treats an array of different injuries and diagnoses. I completely trust Steve to work with many of my clients and refer to him for follow up care when my patients are done with Physical Therapy. He is the only Massage Therapist that I would ever refer my patients to and feel comfortable knowing he will treat them properly with his many years of experience and continuing education that he has acquired over the past years. If you choose to work with Steve you will not be dissappointed!” David L Hadley PT, CSCS, Owner, A + Physical Therapy
“After suffering a lower back (l5 disc herniation) injury in the gym I spent months with physical therapists and felt like I was on the road to nowhere. I was very close to looking into injections or surgery. My life/hobby is physical fitness and I was devastated when it was taken out of the equation. I was lucky to get connected with Steve. I saw him for a few weeks and things started to change for the better. After 3-4 sessions I was back in the gym working out with heavy weights 5-6 days a week. No meds, no surgery, no more PT. I train hard and still follow the stretching program Steve gave me last year. He changed my life so much so I haven't had to see him in over a year :) Go see him!” Mark Yawitz
“Steve Tolnai, owner of Steve's Muscle and Rehabilitation Therapy is the first physical therapist I've ever been to, but have received many "sports massages". I had never been able to get rid of the chronic pain in my trapezoids from lifting and stress, until I went to Steve.
Steve not only relieved the pain for me, he also showed me at home techniques to keep them from flaring up. He showed me what he was doing, told me why he was doing it and made me feel comfortable and calm throughout the entire session.
I have been back to Steve for various things and will continue to go, for whatever the reason. Steve is also great at Swedish Massages, Sports Massages and Steve's Muscle and Rehabilitation Therapy is way more comfortable than going to a massage chain!
I highly recommend Steve and will continue to use his services.” Jayme Hall
“Steve helped me with numbness in my left leg due to muscle strains in 2010. I had been to another physician who just wanted to prescribe large doses of Ibuprofen and did not know how to address the real issue. Steve was very knowledgable, kind and was able to address my pain and numbness right away. My numbness was cured after my appoinment! I highly recommend Steve to anyone who needs muscle therapy.”
“I went to see Steve after an injury. I had seen several doctors/ therapists with no relief. After I left from just one visit I had instant relief and notice significant changes after just a few visits. I would highly recommend Steve!!” Carrie Vidamo
“I went to Steve to try and help me with a chronic pain in my neck, shoulder and arm issue I've been living with for the past few years...(I think they call it Stress and too many long hours on the computer) Steve has literally saved me and has helped manage my day to day pain. I'm a weekly patient of Steve's and all I can say is I would recommend him to anyone and I have sent many people his way because of the results he has achieved on me. He is truly a gifted muscle therapist who takes pride in his work. He has a unique quality of caring for his patients and making sure they get better. He's truly the BEST!!” Tava Udall
“Talented, holistic, no-brainer. If you want to achieve more of your human body potential as a competitive athlete, you want improved results out of your fitness, or if you want to heal an injury naturally, safely & effectively while avoiding the dangerous meds & surgery route, Steve is your go-to practitioner. Just don't take my NMT slot with him! :)” . Heather Dube
